It's opening day of whitetail gun season here in Wisconsin. Our hunters headed out early while I stayed back with the little ones. Temperature report: 10°F and blustery snow and wind. Aka cold.
They returned home about 10am with several deer sightings and shot one doe! At that point they all determined they were very hungry and, because they normally sit all day and don't come home for lunch on opening day, we had no meal plans beyond Kraft Mac & Cheese.
At that point, we decided.....this house probably has all the ingredients for chili and chili sounds fantastic, so giddy up! The adventure is that it's my in-laws house and they were both still in the woods...so my brother-in-law, Hubby and I figured it all out in someone else's kitchen. :)
The recipe we (loosely) followed is here, with a few tweaks:
-of course subbing ground venison for ground beef
-used a jar of my mother-in-laws canned tomatoes instead of traditional store bought diced tomatoes
-added chopped jalapeños for flavor and color
-served over noodles because were in WI
And then we got the news that my father-in-law shot a buck too! Good opening day so far!
