Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! To celebrate the holidays, we spent 6 days (!) in a 16" x 8" fish house on Upper Red Lake...with 7 people (6yo, 4yo, 6mo, me, Hubby, my MIL and FIL).
Let's just say, it went much better than expected. Everyone enjoyed it. Although the fishing wasn't fast and furious, there were enough fish to keep us fishing (most of the time) and keep us fed.
Just as our family normally relies heavily on venison when we're at home, we also do in the fish house! Fish house venison meals included:
Venison Bacon - cooked in the fishhouse on the stove
Venison Sausage Patties - pre-formed at home, pre-cooked at home, warmed up on the stove
Venison Chili - see recipe here: Chili
Venison Hot Dogs - boiled in the fish house
Venison Brats - warmed up and pan-seared on the stove
Venison Charcuterie - i.e. venison sticks, cheese & crackers
For our fish fries, we went to shore and filleted the fish at West Wind Resort in Waskish. I highly recommend this tactic - filleting fish at a local resort that has a fish cleaning station is waaaay easier than doing it in the fish house or on the tail gate of the truck. But who am I kidding....Hubby fillets the fish. :)
Most of our catches were walleye, but had a few perch and a pike too.
